Rapid City Rush News Release

(Rapid City, SD) - On Tuesday night, the Texas Brahmas travelled to Rapid City for the first time, but the Rush did not roll out the welcome mat, topping the Brahmas 5-1. Danny Battochio made 28 saves for his 27th win of the season while Scott Wray became the first Rush player to reach 30 goals in a season. The Rush used strong special teams play for the win, scoring one powerplay goal on just two chances and stifling all 6 Brahmas opportunities.

The Rush came shooting out of the gate in the first period, finishing the opening frame with a 3-0 lead. The first tally came on the powerplay at the 8:24 mark when strong puck movement allowed Jamie VanderVeeken to fire a shot from the point that was deflected home by Colt King for his 25th goal of the season. The Rush would double the lead when Colt King slid a puck to the goal mouth and Blaine Jarvis outmuscled his man and tipped home his 16th of the year. Scoring the final goal of the period was Brendan Cook off of a rebound goal with Scott Wray and Les Reaney coming away with the helpers.

The Brahmas would get on the board just over three minutes into the second period when Jordan Cameron's strong individual effort set up Justin Kinnunen to make it a 3-1 game. The Rush would bounce back less than three minutes later when Jamie VanderVeeken's shot yielded a rebound that was snuck home by Rich Hansen. Then with less than two minutes left, Les Reaney won an offensive zone faceoff back to Scott Wray at the top of the circle and the veteran blasted a slapshot to the top left corner for the 5-1 lead. The goal marked Wray's 30th of the season and the Ottawa, Ontario native is the first Rush player to reach that mark in a season.

With neither team finding the back of the net in the third, the Rush came away with the 5-1 win and now extend their lead to three points in the Northern Conference. Blaine Jarvis' tally served as the eventual game-winner, his first of the season.

The Rush take on the Brahmas again tomorrow, March 17th in the final regular season home game. Tickets are still available for that contest.
