Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky - Opening Night at Louisville Slugger Field brought sunny skies and tough pitching to today's game. Louisville Bats' starting pitcher Robert Stephenson (0-1, 1.50) went toe-to-toe against Toledo Mud Hens' starting pitcher Thad Weber (1-0, 0.00). Stephenson lost his first outing in Triple-A, this season, as Weber was able to crack a win in his first outing of the year, 2-0.
Stephenson and Weber were in a battle through the first few innings. Stephenson struck-out seven batters through his first four innings, allowing just two hits. Weber's line through his first four innings was just as impressive as he allowed just four hits and no runs. Despite allowing a lead-off single to third baseman Casey McGehee in the second and hitting McGehee in the fourth, the Mud Hens were not able to put any runs on the board off of Stephenson.
Stephenson ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth inning. A catcher's interference on Ramon Cabrera to lead off the inning put Mud Hens' designated hitter Wynton Bernard on first base. His second stolen base of the year put him on second and in scoring position for second baseman Tommy Field, who then recorded his first hit and double in the early season down the left field line for an RBI (1). Another double by center fielder Cameron Maybin plated Field for the second run of the game off of Stephenson. The Bats answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a fly-out to right field.
Bats' left fielder, Jesse Winker, was able to produce a two-for-four night with two singles to right field, but no runs came from it. First baseman Brandon Allen was able reach base twice to lead off an inning on a walk and a single in the second and seventh innings, but the Bats were unable to produce a run then, too.
After throwing six innings, allowing four hits, zero runs, one walk, and producing three strike outs, Weber was able to hold onto his win with the help of relievers Blaire Hardy, Alex Wilson, and Bobby Parnell, who was able to record his first save of the season. The four pitchers were able to combine for the Mud Hens' second shutout of the season.
Robert Stephenson finished his night after six innings of work allowing just four hits, two runs (one earned), zero walks, and striking out seven batters, which is a season high amongst Bats' starters. Stephenson ended his night with 90 pitches, 52 of them for strikes.
Tomorrow's game at Louisville Slugger Field will feature right-hander Tim Adleman (0-0, 0.00) for the Bats against Toledo's left-hander Josh Turley (0-0, 0.00) at 7:05 on Fireworks Friday. The Louisville Bats (2-3) will look to even up the series against the Toledo Mud Hens (3-1).
