Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (2-4) dropped their home opener to the Pawtucket Red Sox (3-5) by a score of 13-1 on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Pawtucket grabbed an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the second as Chris Dominguez and Mike Miller each knocked home runs with RBI singles and Dominguez scored when Cole Sturgeon grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
The PawSox extended the lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the third as Dominguez plated a run with a sac fly and Sam Travis delivered an RBI single.
All five runs were charged to Pigs starter Jake Thompson (0-2) who allowed the five runs on six hits while walking three and fanning five over his three innings of work.
Pawtucket starter Sean O'Sullivan (1-1) gave up one run on five hits to go along with a walk and four strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
A four-run fourth opened the lead up to 9-0 for Pawtucket. Travis blasted a three-run shot off of Pigs RHP Colton Murray (1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) and Ryan LaMarre came through with an RBI single.
Lehigh Valley got on the board with a run in the fourth as Andrew Knapp was hit by a pitch, took second on a single and scored on Will Venable's RBI single.
The Red Sox added another pair of runs in the fifth to give themselves an 11-1 advantage as Deven Marrero knocked home a two-run double in the frame.
Chris Marrero's solo shot in the top of the sixth off of RHP Luis Garcia (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) gave the PawSox a 12-1 lead.
Marrero brought home another run with an RBI single in the seventh to give Pawtucket a 13-1 lead.
RHP Andrew Bailey (1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 K) and INF Brock Stassi (1.0 IP, 2 H) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
