Louisville Bats News Release
The Louisville Bats' (2-4) offense backed a stellar pitching performance from Ashton Goudeau and the bullpen with a barrage of three runs in the opening inning to secure a 4-0 shoutout over the Gwinnett Stripers (5-2) at Coolray Field on Tuesday night.
The Bats jumped out to an early lead, silencing the home crowd with a Cheslor Cuthbert single to drive in the first run of the game before Michael De Leon and Alfredo Rodriguez plated two more in the top of the first to make it 3-0.
With the early outburst, Louisville is now outscoring its opponents 15-6 over the first three innings of games this season.
Louisville starter Goudeau turned in a dominant outing in his season debut to lead Louisville to its second shutout in the first six contests of 2021. Goudeau worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no walks and retiring his final 14 batters faced. He turned the ball over to a trio of Bats relievers in Braden Shipley (2.0ip), Brad Brach (1.0ip) and Shane Carle (1.0ip), who combined to slam the door and complete the shutout.
Cuthbert manufactured an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the Bats' bullpen. Beau Taylor walked before Mark Payton singled on a line drive to left field. Two batters later, Cuthbert grounded back up the middle to send Taylor home and boost the score to 4-0.
The two teams will continue the six-game series with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch tomorrow in Gwinnett. Louisville's RHP Tony Santillan (0-0, 0.00) is expected to take the mound against the home LHP Tucker Davidson (1-0, 1.29).
