Lancaster Stormers News Release
Robert Fulton is arguably the most famous son of Lancaster County. Fulton was a legendary American inventor, engineer and artist, credited with developing the first "Commercial" steamboat, as well as inventing a submarine, a system of inland waterways and a steam warship.
2015 marks the 250th Anniversary of Fulton's birth in Southern Lancaster County, so the Lancaster Barnstormers have decided to throw a proper Robert Fulton Birthday Celebration this Saturday, May 30th at Clipper Magazine Stadium before the Barnstormers host the Bridgeport Bluefish at 7pm.
Following the historic bobblehead tradition of Thaddeus Stevens in 2013 and JP McCaskey last year, the Robert Fulton Bobblehead has been carefully crafted and assembled to the highest quality. Kegel's Produce and the Fulton Steamboat Inn are sponsoring the Robert Fulton Bobblehead.
"One of our greatest fans and supporters, Kenny Myers of Kegel's Produce, approached me shortly after the 2014 season offering to sponsor the Robert Fulton Bobblehead," Barnstormers Vice President, Tony DeMarco, explained. "Kenny had attended Fulton Elementary as a child and thought that a Robert Fulton Bobblehead, on the occasion of Lancaster City Schools Night with the Barnstormers, was a perfect follow up to the Stevens and McCaskey Bobbleheads. I immediately went to work with our staff and local historian Thomas Goodhart, to create the bobblehead and the beautiful box that presents Fulton's biographical highlights."
The students of Fulton Elementary will sing Happy Birthday to Robert Fulton. Josh Benner, a Fulton Elementary faculty member, will don a Robert Fulton costume and portray the great man for the night so that the students will actually be singing to a "Robert Fulton".
"Our students are very excited for this very special night." Fulton Elementary Principal, Jill Martin said, "Robert Fulton Night with the Barnstormers has been a tremendous learning experience for our students who have a developed a real appreciation for the man their school is named for."
Gates will open at 6pm on Saturday. Last year, when the JP McCaskey Bobblehead was given away, over 3,000 fans lined up on Prince Street before the gates opened. The Barnstormers will be giving away 1000 Robert Fulton Bobbleheads this Saturday night to the first 1000 fans to enter the gate. "Get in line early on Saturday," DeMarco added. "That is the only way to guarantee that you will receive a Robert Fulton Bobblehead."
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their eleventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
