Long Island Ducks News Release

(Somerset, N.J.) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-6 on Wednesday night in the first game of a four-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

Long Island got on the board quickly, when Lew Ford's RBI ground out in the first inning scored Bryan Sabatella and made it 1-0 Ducks. The Flock extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth thanks to a RBI double from Jon Griffin and a RBI sacrifice fly from Jose Morales off of Patriots starter Randy Boone.

Somerset stormed back in the bottom of the frame for six runs and the lead. A two-run homer from Scott Cousins off of Ducks starter John Brownell highlighted the scoring. A RBI single from David Vidal, a bases-loaded RBI walk drawn by Adam Donachie, and a two-run single from Jonny Tucker accounted for the other four runs as the Patriots batted around their lineup.

The Ducks cut back into the three-run deficit in the fifth. A RBI single from Sabatella followed by a RBI sacrifice fly from Cody Puckett made it 6-5 on favor of the Patriots.

Both teams would go without a run until the eighth when Long Island broke through. Reegie Corona grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to tie the game at six. Ford followed up with a RBI single that scored Delta Cleary, Jr. and helped Long Island keep the lead for good at 7-6. Ryan Kussmaul worked a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell pitched six innings for the Ducks, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking two striking out six. Boone gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out one in five innings. Patrick Crider (1-1) collected the win with a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh. Kyler Newby (4-1) suffered the loss, allowing the two runs in the eighth on four hits with one strikeout.

Puckett and Morales led the way offensively for Long Island with three hits and a RBI apiece.
