Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers built a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Friday night but fizzled quickly, falling to the host Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 7-3, in front of 4,332 at Regency Furniture Stadium.
With the loss, the Barnstormers dropped one game below the .500 mark at 28-29. Southern Maryland, meanwhile, inched closer to a first half title in the Liberty Division, dropping its magic number to nine with a four game lead over Long Island.
Gerard Haran grounded a single into center field with one out in the top of the second and scored when Danny Bravo ripped a double over the head of right fielder John Ramistella. After a grounder to short retired Ryan Mulhern for the second out, Bryan Sabatella drew a base on balls. Quincy Foster singled to left, driving Bravo home for a 2-0 lead, and Lloyd Turner followed with a smash up the middle, producing Sabatella with the third run.
Jermy Acey clubbed his third homer of the year to left field with two outs in the second to put the Blue Crabs on the board. Then, Lancaster squandered an opportunity to put the game away in the third.
Jed Morris and Haran drew consecutive walks and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. The Blue Crabs drew their infielders in, a move that worked as Bravo rolled a grounder to Acey. The second baseman's throw to the plate nailed Morris. Mulhern walked to load the bases, but Sabatella bounced into a force play, ending the threat.
From there, the Barnstormers managed only two hits off Kenny Baugh (5-3) and a trio of relievers.
The Blue Crabs jumped on the momentum.
Mike Just dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line to open the home third and went to third on Travis Garcia's double to right. Patrick Osborn singled to left, scoring Just, and Garcia scored the tying run as James Shanks grounded into a double play.
Jeremy Owens' two-out homer, his 11th of the year, off Ben Fritz (3-3) in the bottom of the fifth put the Blue Crabs on top. Lance Burkhart added a leadoff homer in the sixth for a 5-3 lead. The parade continued in the seventh on James Shanks' bloop hit to right. Travis Garcia singled home the final run in the eighth.
Lancaster returns home Monday to face the division rival Somerset Patriots at 7:05.
NOTES: The three homers tied the season high against the Barnstormers this season...Turner had his fourth multi-hit games in the last five games...Haran has hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games, batting .378...Eric Ackerman (2-4) will face Kenny Rayborn (4-3) Saturday at 6:35.
