Camden Riversharks News Release
The Camden Riversharks defeated the Long Island Ducks tonight, by a final score of 7-5. Camden pitcher Chris Shaver (2-3) picked up the win, as he pitched a scoreless 8th, retiring all three batters he faced. The loss was charged to Long Island reliever Joe Valentine (2-1), who allowed two runs on three hits, and one walk. Closer Felix Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 2nd save of the year. With the win, the Riversharks' season tally improves to 26-31, while Long Island falls to 30-27.
The Riversharks drew first blood in this contest, courtesy of a solo homerun by third baseman Brian Burgamy, his fourth of the season. But, Long Island swiftly answered back in the fourth inning, as center fielder Lew Ford found himself aboard after an error by Riversharks shortstop Bryant Nelson. After a single by third baseman Kyle Reynolds, catcher John Pachot stepped to the plate and drilled a two-run single to left, giving Long Island a 2-1 lead.
The Riversharks would not trail for long. Camden retook the lead, when Nelson took a pitch the opposite way, down the right field line, landing him at second. After a four-pitch walk to second baseman Junior Spivey, left fielder Jon Knott slapped a ball into to the left center gap, scoring Nelson and Spivey for a 3-2 advantage. Knott would eventually make his way home on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti, whose 25th RBI of the season upped the ante to 4-2.
Although the Ducks were able to load the bases with one out in the 6th inning, Riversharks' pitcher Ryan DiPietro was able to shoot down their chances. He allowed only one run on a sacrifice fly by Pachot, which allowed Reynolds to score, and cut the lead in half.
The Sharks would not let Long Island get too close, as they extended their lead, after Knott notched his 2nd RBI of the contest, scoring Nelson, and pushing the lead to 5-3. But the resilient Ducks would strike back in the 7th inning. Shortstop Alex Prieto ripped a double into the right field gap, and advanced to 3rd after a well-executed sacrifice bunt by second baseman Juan Francia. Prieto would come around to score after a single by left fielder Ray Navarrete. The next batter was Matt Cavagnaro who knotted the game with a double to deep left field that plated Navarrete and tied the score at 5-5.
In the 8th inning, Camden would retake the lead for the final time. Nelson drew a one out walk, and was moved to third, after two consecutive singles by Spivey and Knott. The next batter was newly acquired first baseman Jose Leon, who hit a screamer down the right field line, scoring both Spivey and Nelson for the 7-5 advantage.
The ball was turned over to closer Felix Rodriguez in the 9th inning. Rodriguez pitched the final three outs to notch his 2nd save of the season, and seal the victory for the home team.
The Riversharks and Ducks will play game three of their four game series tomorrow night at 5:35PM, where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game. Right-handed pitcher Tom Davey (5-2, 2.00) will take the hill for the Sharks, and will be opposed by Long Island's left-hander Brad Halsey (3-5, 5.53). Limited seating for the game is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
