Banks Two Home Runs Lead Nationals to Big Win

FREDERICK, MD - Nick Banks hit two two-run home runs to help the Potomac Nationals (56-49, 19-19) defeat the Frederick Keys (52-58, 17-23) 12-0 on Thursday afternoon at Nymeo Field. The loss was the second largest margin of defeat for the orange and black this year, and the 10th time that they have been shut out.

The Nationals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first. Jack Sundberg began the game with a single, and Luis Garcia followed with a walk. Tres Barrera brought in Sundberg with a single, and Barrera and Garcia moved to second and third on a balk. Following a Nick Banks walk, the bases were loaded for Rhett Wiseman. He hit a tapper to the right of Keys starter Matthias Dietz, who threw the ball over the head of Collin Woody and allowed all three men to score and make it 4-0.

Garcia hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to add another run for Potomac. They then added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Edwin Lora walked to start the fourth. After Garcia reached on a fielder's choice and Aldrem Corredor walked, Lora sored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, Nick Banks and Rhett Wiseman hit back-to-back doubles to add another run. The P-Nats then scored three times in the sixth. After Sundberg doubled and Garcia singled, Corredor hit a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Banks hit his first of his two home runs which pushed the lead to 10-0.

In the eighth, Barrera walked before Banks hit his second big fly. The two home runs doubled his Potomac season total, and capped the scoring at 12.

Wil Crowe (11-0) stayed perfect on the season by earning the win. The 11 wins now leads the Carolina League, as he fired six scoreless innings. He scattered five hits over that time while walking one and striking out six. Dietz (0-4) took the loss. The right-hander lasted just 3.1 innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) on four hits. He walked four, hit a batter, and struck out one.

The Keys travel to Wilmington to face the Blue Rocks for a three-game set beginning on Friday night. Zac Lowther (3-2, 2.89) makes the start for the Keys. He will be opposed by left-hander Daniel Tillo (2-2, 4.50) for Wilmington. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio app.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. In 2017, the Keys received the Esurance Home Field Advantage Award for Carolina League for the second straight season, after leading the circuit in highest percentage of attendance based on ballpark capacity.
