
Taveras' Big Night Too Much to Overcome for Birds in Loss

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Leody Taveras delivered three RBI singles for the Down East Wood Ducks on Thursday night in a 5-4 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in front of 6,269 from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
With the Pelicans (50-60, 16-24) leading 4-3 in the eighth inning, the Wood Ducks (48-63, 13-28) tied the game as Taveras singled home Eric Jenkins to equal the score at 4-4.
Taveras then gave the Wood Ducks the lead for good 5-4 with another RBI single in the ninth inning off of Tyler Peyton (3-4).
Jacob Lemoine (2-4) took home the win with his two innings out of the bullpen.
The Pelicans struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Jose Gutierrez smacked an RBI triple down the right field line, plating Zach Davis , to make it 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Woodies struck back with a two-run homer from Yanio Perez to nab the advantage at 2-1.
Myrtle Beach knotted the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jared Young scored on an error. Young later reached on a hit-by-pitch to extend his on-base streak to 23 games, the longest active streak in the Carolina League.
The Wood Ducks took the lead right back when Taveras looped an RBI single into right-center in the top of the fifth.
More defensive miscues from the Wood Ducks helped the Birds answer back in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Aramis Ademan singled with Gutierrez at second, the throw to home went to the backstop, allowing Gutierrez to trot home and tie the game at three. The Pelicans then took the lead on a Tyler Alamo sacrifice fly, making it 4-3 Pelicans.
The Pelicans hit the road to take on the Potomac Nationals on Friday to begin a four-game, three-day set. The Birds send RHP Cory Abbott (2-5, 3.76 ERA) to the mound for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against Potomac LHP Ben Braymer (6-3, 3.05 ERA).
