Potomac Nationals News Release
Frederick, MD - The Potomac Nationals (56-49, 19-19) scores in six of their nine trips to the plate on Thursday afternoon in route to a 12-0 win over the Frederick Keys (52-58, 17-24). Potomac scored four runs in the opening frame and never looked back, as RF Nick Banks provided insurance in the latter half of the game with a pair of two-run home runs.
Before RHP Wil Crowe (W, 11-0) even took the mound for the P-Nats, Potomac had a 4-0 advantage. CF Jack Sundberg led off the game with a single against RHP Matthias Dietz (L, 0-4), while SS Luis Garcia followed with a walk. After Diets retired 1B Aldrem Corredor, C Tres Barrera gave Potomac a 1-0 lead with an RBI single. Banks then walked, which loaded the bases for DH Rhett Wiseman. Wiseman cued a ball to the first base side of the pitcher's mound, and while Dietz had multiple options to get an out, the Frederick starting pitcher lofted the ball over the head of 1B Collin Woody. The error on Dietz allowed three runs to score, and made it 4-0 Potomac.
The P-Nats added a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Garcia, a run in the third inning against RHP Lucas Humpal on a wild pitch, a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Wiseman, and made it 8-0 on a sacrifice fly from Corredor in the sixth frame. With Humpal still on the mound, Banks crushed a two-out pitch out of Nymeo Field in the top of the sixth inning for the first of his two, two-run home runs on the afternoon. Potomac led 10-0 after six frames.
Crowe dazzled over six-shutout frames, as he earned his league-leading 11th win of the season. The right-handed pitcher struck out six and walked just one in his first quality start since he came off the DL. Crowe allowed just five hits and got help from the Keys, who went 0-9 with RISP in the loss.
Potomac capped off the afternoon's scoring against LHP Alex Katz in the eighth inning, as Banks went to the opposite field for his second two-run home run of the afternoon. Banks had just two home runs in his first 36 games with Potomac, but matched that in the series finale vs. Frederick.
RHP Jhon Romero worked two scoreless innings for Potomac in his Nationals affiliate system debut, while RHP Steven Fuentes worked a perfect ninth inning and wrapped up Potomac's 12-0 victory.
Off of the series win, the P-Nats will return home and begin a four-game series over the next three days with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The series will get underway on Friday night, as LHP Ben Braymer (6-3, 3.05) is set to make the start for Potomac. Braymer has allowed just one total run over his last two starts, both victories. For the Pelicans, RHP Cory Abbott (2-5, 3.76) is scheduled to make his ninth start of the year for Myrtle Beach. Abbott has allowed no more than two earned runs in any of his last three starts, yet has just one victory in that span.
