WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Infielder Nick Madrigal, who was picked by the Chicago White Sox out of Oregon State University with the fourth overall selection in the 2018 Draft, has earned his first career promotion to High-A Winston-Salem, the White Sox announced on Thursday.
The highest-drafted player in OSU history, Madrigal joins the Dash roster after posting a .341 batting average in 12 games with Low-A Kannapolis. In 66 career plate appearances in the professional ranks, the 21-year-old has yet to strike out.
Prior to joining the White Sox system, Madrigal made his mark as one of the best players in college baseball. As a sophomore, the former Beaver was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year and the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year after posting a .380 batting average with a .449 on-base percentage and a .532 slugging percentage.
Despite missing significant time during his junior season with a broken left wrist, Madrigal helped the Beavers win the 2018 College World Series this year in a best-of-three matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The White Sox announced several other transactions that have affected the Dash's roster. Right-hander Alec Hansen, who led the Minor Leagues in strikeouts last year, has been transferred from Double-A Birmingham from Winston-Salem. Meanwhile, left-hander Ian Clarkin and infielder Mitch Roman have been promoted to Birmingham from Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem currently boasts eight of the top prospects in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline on its active roster, including infielders Madrigal (No. 4), Gavin Sheets (No. 15) and Laz Rivera (No. 28), outfielders Blake Rutherford (No. 7) and Luis Gonzalez (No. 14), and right-handers Hansen (No. 10), Tyler Johnson (No. 23) and Lincoln Henzman (No. 30). Outfielder Luis Robert, who is rated the third-best prospect in the South Siders system, is on the Dash's disabled list, and he is expected to return in mid-August.
The Dash's current active roster stands at 25 players, the Carolina League maximum, with six players on the disabled list and one on the temporary inactive list. A new roster is attached.
The Winston-Salem Dash are the Class-A Advanced Minor League affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. To purchase tickets and for more information, please call 336-714-2287 or visit www.wsdash.com.
