PELICANS FALL 8-3 TO WOOD DUCKS

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped the middle game of their three-game contest with Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Down East Wood Ducks. Andretty Cordero crushed a two-run home run in the second and Ricky Valencia followed with a solo shot of his own to make it 3-0. In the fifth, D.J. Wilson notched an RBI double before Aramis Ademan's RBI ground out cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Down East plated three runs in the sixth inning to widen the margin to 6-2. A bases-loaded walk by Wladimir Galindo got the Birds to within 6-3. The Pelicans could not get any closer, though, as LeDarious Clark's sacrifice fly in the seventh and Chuck Leblanc's RBI double in the eighth set the score at 8-3. Wilson reached base three times in the defeat.

ERICK THE RED

The reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, Erick Leal starts Thursday's rubber match against Down East. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run over his last seven outings dating back to July 4. During that span, Leal has worked 22.2 frames with just two unearned tallies on eight his against his ledger. He has struck out 25 against one walk. Among Carolina League pitchers with a minimum of 40.0 innings this season, Leal leads the circuit in ERA (0.61) and ranks second in FIP (2.15). His 4.4 percent walk rate places sixth and his 21.4 K-BB percent is ninth. Interestingly enough, the Valencia, Venezuela native owns the highest fly ball rate (57.0 percent) in the league. He boasts the

second-lowest line drive rate (8.4 percent) and the ninth-lowest ground ball rate (34.6 percent).

ERROR 503: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE

Thanks to an error in Wednesday's loss to Down East, the Pelicans have set a season-high with miscues in nine consecutive games. Over this stretch, Myrtle Beach has compiled a total of 17 errors. In comparison, in the 22 games prior to this run, the Birds made a total of 15 miscues. Not coincidentally, the Pelicans' 125 errors leads the Carolina League and rank in a tie for the 10th-highest in Minor League Baseball. Having said that, Myrtle Beach's defensive efficiency, which measures how many balls put into a play that a club turns into outs, is .698. The Pelicans posted marks of .689 and .691 in the last two seasons, respectively.

BEAK-A-BOO

Down East's 8-3 victory over Myrtle Beach on Wednesday snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Pelicans against the Wood Ducks. It was also Down East's first triumph over the Birds by more than two runs this season. Even with that defeat, Myrtle Beach has clinched the season series with a 13-7 mark over their friendly foes from Kinston, outscoring the Wood Ducks 118-78 in the process. Of those 20 meetings, 13 have been decided by three runs or less. The Pelicans are 8-5 against Down East in those contests.

YOUNG FOREVER

In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Over the last 18 games, he is batting 23-for-66 with two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs and five walks to slash .348/.403/.515. Young has reached base in all 22 games with Myrtle Beach, and dating back to his time with Low-A South Bend, is currently on a 31-game on-base streak.

MY HEART'S A MONASTERIO

In 16 games from June through July 13 Myrtle Beach infielder Andruw Monasterio went just 7-for-56 (.125) at the plate. The Caracas, Venezuela native has reached base in each of his 12 contests since, batting 18-for-42 with two doubles, one home run and five RBIs to slash a sizzling .429/.500/.548 during this run. After posting a walk rate of 5.2 percent between Short Season Class A Eugene and Low-A South Bend in 2016 and 8.3 percent with South Bend and Myrtle Beach last year, Monasterio is walking in 11.6 percent of his plate appearances this season.

PELICAN POINTS

Jhonny Pereda had his 21-game on-base streak snapped on Wednesday with an 0-for-4 day... The Chicago Cubs announced Thursday that Kevonte Mitchell has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1. To take his place on the active roster, Zach Davis was reassigned to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend. Davis was hitting .289/.373/.344 (5 2B, 5 3B, 25 RBIs, 31 SB) in Low-A.
