Banks Shuts off Power Offense
April 20, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- April 20, 2016)- The Kannapolis Intimidators broke the West Virginia Power's eight game win streak, as they knocked off the Power 1-0 at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia suffered its first home loss of the season on the final day of the team's season opening home stand.
Kannapolis left hander Tanner Banks threw a complete game shutout, limiting the Power to just four hits.
Power starter Dario Agrazal matched Banks zero for zero, allowing just four hits and a walk across six shutout innings. Agrazal held the opposition scoreless for the second time in his first three starts of the year.
West Virginia threatened to break the scoreless tie in the fifth, when both Daniel Arribas and Tyler Filliben reached base with one out, however Banks induced two consecutive groundouts to escape the inning unscathed.
The Intimidators picked up the only run of the game in the eighth inning off Seth McGarry (0-1). Following a Danny Mendick single. Grant Massey lined a double into right field allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate and put Kannapolis up 1-0.
That lead would prove to be all that Banks (3-0) needed to complete the shutout, as he retired ten of the final 11 Power hitters.
Alfredo Reyes led the way for the Power offense going two for three with a double, extending his hitting streak to seven games. The shortstop raised his average from .167 to .263 during that stretch.
The Power will travel to Lexington for a four game series with the Legends beginning Thursday night. South Atlantic league Pitcher of the week Mitch Keller takes the hill for West Virginia, facing off against Legends starter Julio Pinto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Whittaker Bank Ballpark.
West Virginia will return home April 26th for a seven game home stand with the Rome Braves and Asheville Tourist.
