Willmar Stingers News Release
Willmar, Minn. - Choosing the best starting pitcher might be a difficult task for Stingers manager Drew Saberhagen at this point in time.
Willmar got another sparkling performance from yet another arm in its starting rotation Saturday night, as Bradley Bailey continued his dominance in a 4-3 win over St. Cloud at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Bailey allowed just two hits in his seven innings against the Rox (10-7) and has yielded just one unearned run over the course of his last 13 innings. That dates back to last Saturday at Madison where he threw six shutout innings for the Stingers. He allowed a leadoff single in the first inning against the Rox, but then settled down and rolled through the St. Cloud lineup.
While Bailey did his thing, the offense provided the run support for its starter. It started with a run in the bottom of the second when Tyler Leffler singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Stingers. Then in the second inning, the Stingers (9-8) got the rest of their offense with a three-run frame. Billy Quirke led off with a walk, stole second and then Dan Motl doubled Quirke home. Motl scored on Troy Dixon's RBI single, and Storm Wilson, who had reached two batters before Dixon on a walk, came around on a balk to put the Stingers up four.
That was all Bailey needed, as he retired 11 straight and nine straight batters in two separate stretches. And despite striking out just two batters, Bailey did not yield a walk in his seven innings.
St. Cloud scored two on Stingers closer Brady Anderson in the top of the ninth, but Anderson registered a strikeout to quell the rally and give the Stingers the win.
