Kingfish Shut Out Woodchucks 9-0

Kenosha, Wis. -Behind the arm of Josh Serio and the bats of a pair of middle infielders, the Kingfish cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks Saturday night at Simmons Field.

The Kingfish (14-5) bats came ready to hit, scoring three runs in the first three innings. Zach Weigel scored in the first on an RBI groundout by Hunter Alexander to give the Kingfish the early 1-0 lead. Shortstop Bobby Sheppard drove in Brody Westmoreland in the second inning with a double and Sheppard later came around on a Weigel RBI groundout to make it a 3-0 lead for the Kingfish.

The Kingfish broke it open in the sixth inning thanks to Sheppard and fellow infielder second baseman Mitch Gasbarro. With one out, Sheppard and Gasbarro singled. After Nick Sergakis walked to load the bases, Alex Borglin delivered a two RBI single to drive in two runs and push the lead to 6-0. With the Kingfish leading 7-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Kingfish middle infielders were at it again at the plate. Sheppard drove in his second run of the game and then Gasbarro brought home Sheppard with a double. The two infielders combined to go 5-7 with three RBIs and four runs.

Serio delivered again on the mound to improve to 4-0 on the year. The righty allowed zero runs on four hits, dropping his ERA to 0.39 for the season. Serio dished out another six strikeouts to give him a team high 31 strikeouts on the year. Dillon Mazzoccoli came in to pitch the final four innings to earn the save. Mazzoccoli also mowed down five Woodchuck batters to give Kingfish pitching 11 total strikeouts on the night.

The Woodchucks (6-10) were led by LJ Hatch and Albee Weiss at the plate, both going 2-3. Dylan Dwyer took the loss for Wisconsin, allowing two runs and two hits over four innings of work.

On Sunday at 3:05 p.m. the Kingfish host the Woodchucks for game two of the series. Uke's Harley Davidson Mini Bike Elvis Bobbleheads will be distributed to fans. A limited amount of bobbleheads are available so make sure to arrive early to Simmons Field to claim one. Tickets are $2 off to veterans and active military members on Sunday, June 14th as part of Columbia College Military Appreciation Sundays. For the kids, a Petting Zoo sponsored by Jerry Smith Pumpkin Farm will be down in the Aurora Health Club Kid Zone and after the game kids get to run the bases.
