Kitchener Rangers News Release
Justin Bailey scored the lone Rangers goal for the Kitchener Rangers in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday night. Dawson Carty made 26 saves for Kitchener in his first start since joining the Rangers in a trade earlier this month.
Justin Bailey put the Rangers on the board first, scoring on the power play eight minutes into the opening period. The Buffalo Sabres prospect fired a high, rising shot from the left wing that soared past Spirit netminder Jake Paterson. His eighth goal of the season was also the 50th of his Ontario Hockey League career, and extends his season scoring streak to an eighth game. Helpers on the play were credited to defenceman Max Iafrate and import rookie Gustaf Franzen, who has recorded an assist in four consecutive outings.
Each team fired seven shots on goal in the opening period of play.
The sides skates through a scoreless second period, with each team recording 13 shots on goal.
Jimmy Lodge ended goaltender Dawson Carty's shutout bid with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation. With Paterson on the bench for the extra attacker, the Spirit gained the puck on the offensive zone faceoff and moved it quickly to veteran Jimmy Lodge. The American winger squeezed a low shot past the netminder's blocker to level the score at 1-1 and force the game into overtime. Marcus Crawford and Dylan Sadowy earned the assists on Lodge's fifth goal of the season.
Kitchener out-shot the Spirit 7-5 in the third period, and 27-25 through regulation.
Neither team could break the deadlock in overtime, sending the contest to a shootout. Carty stopped two of three Saginaw shooters, but Sadowy's goal proved the winner as Paterson made three saves to secure the win.
Carty made 26 saves in his first start with the Rangers (4-3-0-2), who have picked up at least one point in four consecutive games.
