Sudbury Wolves News Release

The Sudbury Wolves played a solid road game and out-shot, out-played and out-chanced the #3 ranked team in the country but fell 3-2 to the Erie Otters in Erie, Pennsylvannia on Friday night. The Wolves played a text-book road game and despite falling behind 1-0 after the first period, the Wolves outshot the Otters 29-14 the rest of the way but could only light the lamp on two occasions.

Wolves' defenceman Austin Clapham enjoyed a solid offensive game as the 17 year old rookie defenceman led the Wolves with a goal and an assist. Clapham used his hard accurate wrist shot to score the first goal of the game to narrow the Otters lead to 2-1. After the Otters scored to make it 3-1, Clapham then made a smart pass to Danny Desrochers and the 19-year-old veteran made no mistake tipping Clapham's shot past the Erie goaltender.

The Wolves started slow in this one as the Otters outshot the Wolves 12-5 in the first frame and scored an even strength goal before the three minute mark of the game. The Otters then scored off of a Wolves turnover late in the second period and scored to make it 2-0 with only 12 seconds left on the scoreclock.

The Wolves were relentless in the third period and Clapham's heroics were not quite enough. Wolves' forward David Zeppieri had a great chance to tie the game but just missed the gaping net. The Wolves out shot the Otters 12-6 in the second period and 17-8 in the third period but couldn't get the equalizer before the final buzzer.

Pavel Jenys had an outstanding game for the Wolves and recorded an assist. Jeff Corbett played his best game of the season for the Wolves and picked-up an assist. Nathan Pancel also added an assist for the Wolves.

Troy Timpano was solid in goal for the Wolves as he stopped 23 of the 26 shots that he faced. The best junior player in the world - Connor McDavid recorded two assists in the game to lead the Otters offensively. The Wolves' power play continued to struggle as the Wolves were 0 for 6 with the man advantage. The Wolves penalty-killing was excellent on this night going 0 for 4. Final shots on goal favoured the Wolves 34-26.

The Wolves will now head to St. Catherines to take-on the Niagara IceDogs who also lost Friday night in Guelph. Both teams are struggling so far this season in the early going with only one win each. It will be the Wolves' first visit to the brand new 5,300 seat Meridien Centre in St. Catherines. The game can be heard on KFM 95.5 with Stew Kernan calling the play-by-play.
