Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Abel Moreno scattered eight hits and two runs over 7-1/3 innings to lead the Kernels past the Lansing Lugnuts, 6-2, Friday night in a Midwest League baseball game played before a crowd of 2,657 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The win moved the Kernels (28-19) into a tie for first place in the Western Division with Kane County. Peoria was one-half game back and could make it a three-way tie with a win over Wisconsin on Friday night.

Moreno (4-2) notched his third win in as many outings. He is the first Kernels starter to work into the eighth inning this season.

The Kernels scored three runs in the sixth inning to erase a 2-0 Lansing lead, then tacked on three more in the eighth to put the game away.

Nick Kimpton had three hits, including his third double in two games. Five different Kernels drove in runs.

The Kernels struggled against Lansing starter Randy Wells (1-5) for the first five innings, collecting just two hits against the curveball tossing former catcher.

Kimpton's hustling double with one out in the sixth sparked a three-run Kernels uprising. A balk and base on balls put runners on the corners. Quan Cosby hit a two-hopper to Lansing third baseman Alberto Garcia and his throw home ricocheted off Kimpton for a run-scoring error. Howie Kendrick walked to load the bases and Wells was lifted in favor of right-hander Reid Willett, who walked Bobby Wilson to force in the tying run. Matt Brown's sacrifice fly gave the Kernels a 3-2 lead.

The Kernels added three runs in the eighth, when they strung together five of their nine hits. Sean Rodriguez and Blake Balkcom had RBI singles and Aaron Peel drew a bases-loaded walk.

NIBLETS – The Kernels continue a four-game home series against Lansing on Saturday at 5 p.m. Kevin Jepsen (4-1) will start for the Kernels against Lansing's Ronald Bay (4-3). The series runs through Monday. ... The Cubs have confirmed that former major leaguer Ryan Dempster, who underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow 10 months ago, will pitch for Lansing on Monday in the series finale against the Kernels. Game time is 2 p.m. ... All Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600 AM with John Rodgers.
