Battle Creek Yankees lose to the Burlington Bees 8-7

Paul Thorp blew his first save of the season and the Battle Creek Yankees lost to the Burlington Bees 8-7 in Midwest League action Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. Thorp had not given up a run in 20 previous innings of work.

Burlington raced out to a 5-0 lead scoring one run in the third and four in the fourth. Battle Creek got on the board in the fourth on a two-run home run by Matt Carson ‹ his first in Battle Creek ‹ and tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth. Omir Santos and Willie Vasquez hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning, Eric Duncan singled home Hector Made and John Urick singled home Duncan.

The Yankees took the lead in the eighth on Enrique Cruz¹s first home run of the season and that set the stage for the ninth. Thorp got the first two batters out, but couldn¹t finish off the Bees. After Mitch Maier singled, Kenard Springer hit a two-run home run to give the Bees the 8-7 lead. Steve Bray retired the Yankees in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Bees the win.

Abel Gomez (5-0) struggled, giving up seven hits and six runs ‹ only two earned ‹ in 4.2 innings, but didn¹t factor in the decision.

The series continues Saturday night at 6. Elvys Quezada (1-3, 2.92) will take the mound for the first time since his no-hitter, he¹ll square off against John Gragg (2-2, 2.06) for the Bees.
