Medlock Masterful as Dragons down Wizards 5-2

Fort Wayne, IN – The Dayton Dragons (20-28) got the final leg of its 12 day 12 game road trip off to a good start against the Fort Wayne Wizards (19-29). The Dragons used two solo home runs, first professional runs batted in and outstanding starting pitching to pick up a 5-2 win over the Wizards in the first game of the four game memorial Day weekend series.

Dayton got on the board in the top half of the first inning off Fort Wayne starter Dirk Hayhurst (L, 3-2) to take a 1-0 lead. Dragons second baseman Luis Bolivar pulled a 3-2 pitch down the line in left field clearing the 16-foot high wall for his fifth home run of the season. Fort Wayne tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning off Dragons starter Calvin Medlock (W, 5-2). Catcher George Kottaras hammered a Medlock offering to right for his second HR of the season.

The solo home runs continued in the Dayton fourth as Joey Votto got in the act. Votto crushed a Hayhurst offering over the scoreboard in right center field and the Dragons regained the lead at 2-1. Votto's sixth of the season was also good for his 29th RBI and put Dayton ahead to stay. Hayhurst pitched well on the night but suffered his second loss on the season. The right hander threw 6.0 innings of four hit, two run baseball with six strikeouts and no walks.

Medlock was the man for the Dragons frustrating Fort Wayne hitters all night long. The righty threw 76 pitches on the night, getting through the sixth inning before he gave way to Omar Segovia (S, 2). Medlock allowed two hits and one run on the night, with eight strikeouts and no walks allowed. Segovia picked up where Medlock left off, tossing 3.0 innings of one run relief to pick up his second save.

Dayton picked up some insurance off Grant Gregg (ND) in the top of the seventh. The left hander came in after Hayhurst departed. Walter Olmstead drew a lead off walk and moved to third on a Kyle Smith double. With one down and the infield drawn in, Jeremiah Piepkorn picked up his first professional runs batted in as his single scored both runners and gave the Dragons a 4-1 lead. Will Hudson added a two out double that scored Piepkorn to push the Dragons advantage to 5-1.

Fort Wayne added a run off Segovia in the ninth on a solo shot from second baseman Peeter Ramos. Segovia got Drew Macias to fly to right with two on to end the game and preserve the win for Medlock.

The Dragons and Wizards continue the four game series with a 5:00 PM first pitch on Saturday. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 4:30 PM. The Dragons will send RHP Brock Till to the mound, while Fort Wayne will start RHP Jared Wells.
