MWL1 West Michigan Whitecaps

'Caps Win Game, Lose Shortstop

May 28, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

The West Michigan Whitecaps received a solid pitching performance from their top starter on Thursday night and survived a scary ninth inning to snap a four-game losing streak. The Lansing Lugnuts scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to get within one before the Whitecaps turned a game-ending double play to win, 3-2.

The Whitecaps grabbed a 3-0 lead in their third at-bat when Kelly Hunt hit a two-run homer and then Garth McKinney followed with his club-leading ninth homer of the season.

'Caps starter Andy Baldwin went eight solid innings to win his club-leading sixth game of the season. Reliever Anthony Tomey got the final Lansing batter to hit into a double play to earn his first save of the year.

Before the game, the Detroit Tigers promoted Whitecaps shortstop Tony Giarratano to Lakeland of the Florida State League. Giarratano, who was hitting .285, was the leading hitting regular and was playing sensational defense for West Michigan before his promotion.

The Whitecaps will now head to Beloit, Wisconsin, for a holiday weekend series with the Beloit Snappers. Game one is Friday night at 7:30 Michigan time.
