B-Mets Weather Delay, Top Seawolves 13-8

Binghamton plated a season-high eight runs in the first inning, but had to suffer through a one-hour, 41-minute rain delay to see its 13-8 win to completion Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The game was delayed due to torrential rains in the top of the second inning and was eventually completed after midnight Sunday morning.

The B-Mets had a heyday in the first frame courtesy of two Erie pitchers inability to find the strike zone. Starter Duane Below and reliever Cory Hamilton combined to walk six men and throw three wild pitches in the first inning alone. Binghamton managed just three hits in the frame, including an RBI double from Kirk Nieuwenhuis and a solo homer from Sean Ratliff, his ninth. When the dust had cleared, the B-Mets were eight runs richer. Below departed after two thirds of an inning having allowed five runs and would later be hung with the loss.

Binghamton (52-49) starter Chris Schwinden had his outing halted in the second with two on and one out when the field became unplayable due to the rain. Erie manager Phil Nevin was tossed from the game for arguing the tarping with first base umpire Jon Saphire.

Edgar Ramirez replaced Schwinden when play resumed and promptly gave up a three-run homer to the first batter he faced, Chris White. It was White's second homer in as many days.

The SeaWolves continued their assault in the third with three runs to get within two. After Rawley Bishop singled and Audy Ciriaco walked, Deik Scram smacked a double to left, scoring Bishop. Kody Kaiser followed with an RBI groundout and Jeff Kunkel capped the scoring with an RBI knock to center, trimming the score to 8-6.

Nieuwenhuis issued a response in the bottom of the third. Right-hander Jose Ortega had retired five straight upon facing Jon Malo with the bases empty and two outs. Malo singled on the infield to start the rally. He was joined on base when Evans smoked a single to center. Nieuwenhuis plated both men with his 16th homer of the season, a three-run blast to right-center, upping the advantage to 11-6. Nieuwenhuis drove in four runs in the game and finished 3-5, a triple short of the cycle.

The two teams traded two-run frames in the fifth and the sixth to maintain the five-run gap.

Roy Merritt was named the winner, tying a career-high with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The appearance matched the longest outing from his rookie season with Rookie-league Kingsport recorded August 9, 2007 at Danville.

Nick Evans scored three runs and went 3-4 in the contest with an RBI. Jon Malo produced his best game out of the leadoff spot, reaching base four times with a pair of singles and walks and three runs scored.

Binghamton will try for the series victory in the finale Sunday at 1:05 PM. LHP Mike Antonini (6-8, 4.20) starts for the B-Mets opposite RHP Anthony Shawler (1-2, 4.44) of Erie. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 12:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
