B-Mets Antonini Lacks Support in 4-1 Loss to Erie

Mike Antonini limited Erie to just a run on four hits over six innings, but ended as the loser in Binghamton's 4-1 loss to Erie Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The loss forced the B-Mets to settle for a split in the four-game set. The contest was delayed 59 minutes at the outset due to rain.

Antonini and SeaWolves' starter Anthony Shawler threw up dueling zeroes until the fifth inning when Erie broke through against the southpaw. Deik Scram popped up an Antonini curveball, sending it to right where Raul Reyes battled the sun and lost the ball, resulting in a leadoff double. After Kody Kaiser struck out, Andy Bouchie laced a single into center, plating Scram to make it 1-0 Erie.

Bouchie was at it again in the seventh against reliever Eric Niesen. The SeaWolves' catcher smashed a fastball out of the yard to right-center for his eighth homer, upping the advantage to two.

Binghamton (52-50) finally tallied against Shawler in the seventh. Kirk Nieuwenhuis opened the frame with a double off the base of the left-field wall. Two batters later, Michael Fisher scored him with a double off the wall in right-center, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

Erie (41-61) responded with another long ball in the eighth to put the game out of reach. After Niesen walked Cesar Nicolas on four pitches, Rawley Bishop rode the wind out of the park to right. It was Bishop's fourth homer with the SeaWolves and stretched the lead to 4-1.

Shawler worked a season-long, seven innings and held the B-Mets to a run on three hits with six strikeouts en route to his second win of the year. Zach Simons and Lester Oliveros followed with a scoreless innings to nail down the game. Oliveros struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

Binghamton opens up a new three-game set with the Portland Sea Dogs Monday at 6:35 PM. LHP Robert Carson (0-2, 6.75) gets the call for the B-Mets against RHP Casey Kelly (3-4, 4.85) of Portland. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
