Lexington Legends News Release
The Augusta GreenJackets started fast with three runs in the first inning and went on to an 11-6 win over the Lexington Legends Thursday night in Augusta.
The Legends had 15 hits in the game, but left 13 men on base.
After the Legends scored a run in the top of the first, Johneshwy Fargas led off the bottom half with a double. Cristian Paulino sacrificed him to third, from where he scored on a wild pitch. Aramis Garcia followed with his seventh home run of the year to give Augusta a 2-1 lead, and back-to-back doubles by Jonah Arenado and Skyler Ewing produced a third run.
The Legends got one run back in the third when Alfredo Escalera, who had four hits in the game, led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Brandon Downes' single.
But Augusta answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. A walk, a single and another walk loaded the bases, and a wild pitch allowed a run to score. After Jeremy Sy was hit by a pitch, Kyle Zimmer relieved starter Foster Griffin. A walk to Andrew Cain forced in another run. Will Callaway flied out, but a walk to Fargas brought in the third run of the inning, giving Augusta a 6-2 lead. Paulino reached on an error by Zimmer as the fourth run came home.
The Legends scored a run in the fourth to cut the lead to four at 7-3, but Augusta added three more runs in the seventh inning. Dylan Davis led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Sy. Andrew Cain walked, and after Evan Beal relieved Brennan Henry, Callaway singled to right field, scoring Davis and sending to Cain to third. Fargas fouled out, but Paulino's infield single scored Cain and moved Callaway to third.
Callaway scored when Michael Hill committed a throwing error on a ball hit by Garcia, giving Augusta a 10-3 lead.
Each team scored a run in the eighth, and the Legends added two in the ninth, one coming on Downes' fourth home run of the year. Downes had three hits and two runs batted in.
Dustin Knight (4-1), who entered the game at the start of the fifth inning, got the win. Griffin (0-2), the Legends starter, took the loss.
Augusta won two of three games in the series. The Legends open a three-game series against the Rome Braves Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
