Suns Take Two of Three from Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Despite suffering a 13-5 setback on Thursday night, the Hagerstown Suns (33-33) still managed to take two games of a three-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators (33-34) in the team's first trip to Kannapolis this season. Hagerstown and Kannapolis will meet seven more times at CMC-NorthEast Stadium during the second half of the season.

On Thursday night Kannapolis raced out to an 8-0 lead after the first two innings, and cruised from there, scoring at least one run in six of the eight frames in which they came to bat. Starting RHP Joan Baez (0-1) was charged for all eight of those first two inning runs, as his final line read one plus innings pitched, eight earned runs allowed on five hits and three walks. He was charged with the loss while starting RHP Thad Lowry (8-2) earned the win for the Intimidators. He threw six innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three. One of the hits he allowed was a solo homerun by SS Osvaldo Abreu in the sixth inning. That was just the second homerun hit by the Suns in the month of June.

In game two of the series on Wednesday night the Suns scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to break a 1-1 tie and come away with a 4-1 win. Designated hitter Jose Marmolejos drove in the winning run with a one-out line drive single to right. Later in the inning 1B Grant DeBruin and RF Jeff Gardner hit back-to-back run producing doubles to open up the lead and set the final score.

LHP R. C. Orlan (2-0) threw two scoreless and hitless innings in relief for Hagerstown to earn the win. LHP Jake Walsh retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th for his second save of the season in his first outing in more than a month. RHP David Trexler (0-2) got tagged with the loss for Kannapolis. In two innings worked he was charged for three earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three.

In the first game of the series on Tuesday night the Suns totaled 13 hits, including a season-high six doubles, en route to an 8-4 win. Hagerstown jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings to take control of the game, though the Intimidators made things interesting by plating three in the seventh to cut their deficit to two at the time. However, the Suns answered right back with two runs of their own the next half inning thanks to RBI hits by CF Cody Dent and catcher Raudy Read to set the final score. Dent finished the game with a team-high three hits, while Read was one of two suns to drive in multiple runs in the game.

Starting RHP Luis Reyes (3-4) was staked to that early 5-0 lead and was able to cruise through six innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out one to earn the win. Starting RHP Yelmison Peralta (2-6) suffered the loss for Kannapolis. He threw five innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits and six walks while striking out two. Both teams wound up using three pitchers in the game.

In total Kannapolis outscored Hagerstown 18-17 in the series, but the Suns outhit the Intimidators 30-29. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to take on the Delmarva Shorebirds (33-33) in a three-game series beginning on Friday, June 19. The Suns will send RHP Drew Van Orden (3-1) to the mound for his seventh start and 12th appearance this season. He will square off against LHP John Means (5-3) for the Shorebirds. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:05pm.
