Asheville Tourists News Release

SAVANNAH, GA-- The Asheville Tourists allowed the Savannah Sand Gnats to jump out to a 2-0 lead after two innings on Wednesday night. From then on, the Tourists pitching staff kept the Sand Gnats from scoring the rest of the way; which included four extra innings.

John Mora gave the home team a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the first. Johnathan Johnson made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single in the second. Asheville's Ryan Castellani buckled down and worked out of jams in the third and fourth innings keeping the score at 2-0.

The Tourists leveled the game in the sixth. With two outs and runners at second and third, Wes Rogers lined a single back up the middle. Drew Weeks scored from third and Shane Hoelscher raced home from second just ahead of the throw from center.

Following Rogers' game-tying single, each team was sent back to their dugout without a run for the remainder of regulation and for the first three extra innings. In the top of the 13th, Asheville finally broke through.

Forrest Wall took second base to lead off the inning on a Sand Gnats error. Hoelscher sacrificed wall to third. Savannah then issued back-to-back intentional walks to load the bases. Asheville's Luis Jean worked a full count before lining a single into right field, plating Wall. It was the Tourists first lead of the game. Sean Dwyer followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.

Josh Michalec worked a one, two, three bottom of the 13th to secure the win. Like Michalec, Blake Shouse, Jerad McCrummin, Shane Halley, and Yoely Bello all turned in scoreless performances out of the Tourists bullpen.

Asheville will look to take the series from Savannah with the rubber match set for Thursday night at 7:05pm.
