Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - Scarlyn Reyes struck out a career-high 11 batters to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats to a 3-2 win over the Asheville Tourists on Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (36-31) remained tied with the Greenville Drive, who also won Thursday, for first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division with three games to play.
The Gnats finish up the first half with three games in Augusta, while the Drive travel to Lakewood.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Gnats struck for two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Centerfielder John Mora began the inning with a triple and came home to even the game at 1-1 on second baseman Forrest Wall's 10th error of the year. After a walk, Jonathan Johnson lined the go-ahead single into left field to give the Gnats a 2-1 advantage.
The Gnats added a run in the eighth on a wild pitch from reliever Logan Sawyer.
In the ninth, Reyes fell one out short of a complete game. The Tourists loaded the bases with no outs, helped by a pair of contested calls on the bases. However, Reyes bounced back to strike out Josh Fuentes for the first out. A run scored on a fielder's choice for the second point, at which point Reyes hit his pitch count. The Gnats called on reliever Jimmy Duff, who struck out Wes Rogers to seal the Gnats' 3-2 victory.
The 8.2 innings were a new career-high for Reyes, who allowed two unearned runs while striking out 11 batters without issuing a walk. Reyes threw 75 of his 100 pitches for strikes to earn the win to improve to 7-4.
The Sand Gnats will travel to Augusta to take on the GreenJackets for the final three games before the All-Star Break. The Gnats will start RHP Corey Oswalt (3-3, 4.60), while Augusta will send LHP Matt Gage (3-3, 4.99) to the hill. Savannah will return home after the All-Star Break on Thursday, June 25th to start a nine-game home stand against the Lexington Legends. The series opener will be another Budweiser Thirsty Thursday with half-priced regular sodas and draft beers all night long brought to you by Budweiser, E-93, Connect Savannah, and I-95. Gates will open at 6 PM and first pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
