Greenville Drive News Release
Greensboro, NC - Badly needing a victory to salvage the three-game series, the Greenville Drive got ahead early and held on late to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-3 on Thursday night.
The Drive scored twice in the top of the second to claim a 2-0 lead. A two-out double by Javier Guerra scored Mike Meyers, who singled with one out, and Michael Chavis followed with an RBI single for the second run.
Greensboro (29-38) answered back in the bottom half of the inning when K.J. Woods drew a leadoff walk against Michael Kopech and came all the way home on an Austen Smith double.
Zach Sullivan's RBI single in the fifth tied the game at two and chased Kopech from the game after allowing two runs in four and two-third innings with four strikeouts.
After Grasshoppers reliever James Buckelew (3-1) issued a walk to Jordan Procyshen and gave up a single to Chavis in the seventh, Joseph Monge and Derek Miller each struck for RBI singles to extend the Drive lead to 4-2.
That rally gave Kuehl McEachern (4-2) the win, as the right-hander gave the Drive three and two-third quality innings of relief while allowing just one run.
That run came in the ninth inning, when Smith's infield single plated Arturo Rodriguez, who began the frame with a single of his own, to cut the lead to 4-3. With runners on the corners, the Drive turned to Kyle Kaminska in relief, and he came up huge, getting Justin Twine to ground into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to earn his first save.
Chavis had two hits and an RBI to pace the Greenville offense. Smith collected two hits and drove in a pair of Greensboro runs.
From here, the Drive head north and will conclude the first half against the Lakewood BlueClaws, affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch on Friday night is at 7:05.
With three games remaining in the first half, the Drive and Savannah Sand Gnats are tied at 36-31 on the season. Savannah owns the tiebreaker by virtue of a better head-to-head record, so the Drive must finish ahead in the standings to claim the Southern Division first half title.
