Augusta Lynx News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta Lynx posted two losses this past week, both at the South Carolina Stingrays to fall to 7th place in the South Division. On Tuesday, the Lynx fell to the Stingrays 5-2. The Lynx got off to a great start with leads of 1-0 and 2-1, however four unanswered goals by the Stingrays in the second half of the game was too much for the Lynx in the loss. Rookies #20 Matt Auffrey and #11 Matt Christie had the goals for the Lynx, while goaltender #1 Gerald Coleman made 30 saves. On Sunday night, the Lynx played a much better 60 minutes of hockey, however Stingrays goaltender Josh Johnson managed to keep every shot out of the net for the 1-0 shutout. His counterpart, Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert was equally impressive, however his 21 saves weren't enough for the Lynx in the shutout loss. The two losses dropped the Lynx to 7th place in the South Division, two points out of 6th place. The Lynx have played 55 games this season, the fewest in the South Division to date.

The week that was:

Tuesday, February 26, Augusta Lynx 2 @ South Carolina Stingrays 5

The Augusta Lynx played well enough to win on Tuesday night in Charleston, South Carolina... through the first 40 minutes anyway. However, it was the final 20 minutes that would elude the Lynx on this night as the Stingrays poured in three goals in the 3rd period to win going away, 5-2. The Lynx got off on the right foot, as #20 Matt Auffrey scored his 20th goal of the season tipping in a power play goal with assists to #25 Adrian Veideman and #15 Eric Lundberg. It was the first time in the last seven games the Lynx have scored the first goal of the game. South Carolina answered back early in the 2nd period as Chris Chaput collected a loose rebound in front after a save from #1 Gerald Coleman to make it 1-1. The Lynx went back up 2-1, again on the power play with a one-timer goal from #11 Matt Christie, his 10th of the season with help from Lundberg and #12 Ryan Dingle. The Stingrays answered back yet again with a one-timer goal from Trent Campbell to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods. The 3rd period was all Stingrays, as Paul McIlveen, Grant McNeil, and Chris Chaput all scored 3rd period goals to defeat the Lynx 5-2. The Lynx mounted a couple of offensive chances, but Stingrays goaltender Davis Parley stopped all 11 Lynx shots in the final frame to preserve the win. South Carolina now holds a 4-3 advantage over the Lynx this season. South Carolina outshot the Lynx 35-29 for the game. The Lynx went 2 for 5 on the power play, while the Stingrays went 1 for 4.

Sunday, March 2, Augusta Lynx 0 @ South Carolina Stingrays 1

The Augusta Lynx played good enough to win a well-fought road game on Sunday night in South Carolina, but thanks to 34 saves by Stingrays goaltender Josh Johnson the Lynx were denied a win for the third straight game, falling 1-0. Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert gave an equally impressive performance in between the pipes for the Lynx, including two breakaway saves in the 1st period. The 2nd period saw the Stingrays go up 1-0 on a power play goal by leading-scorer Travis Morin, who smashed home a pass from behind the net past a helpless Gopfert. The rest of the way out was an all-out Lynx attack as they outshot the Stingrays 34-22 for the game. The Lynx thought they had the game tied up in the 3rd period with a goal from #14 Tim Branham, but referee Ryan Sweeney had ruled that Branham had used a kicking motion when he deflected the puck behind Johnson for the 1-1 tie. The goal was waived off, and the 'Rays held onto the 1-0 lead for the remainer of the game. The Lynx had plenty of power play chances in the game, but for the second straight night failed to score with the man advantage, going 0 for 7 on this night. The loss was the Lynx 25th of the season.
