Devils Sweep Through West Virginia

March 3, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Devils accomplished two major goals this past weekend. They kept pace with the Johnstown Chiefs in the playoff hunt, and kept the deafening horn at WesBanco Arena from blaring no more than three times in 120 minutes. Trenton assured itself of at least a split in the season series with Wheeling by taking both contests in West Virginia behind an outburst of scoring and excellent goaltending. The Devils are in sixth place in the North with a record of 21-29-3-5, and sit nine points behind the Johnstown Chiefs for the final playoff spot in the division.

NAILERS POUNDED: Jason Smith was perfect through 58 minutes of play and Trevor Kell earned three points (2g, 1a) as the Devils held off the Nailers, 4-2. Trenton was firmly in control for all but two minutes of the contest, as Kell and Andrew Leach combined to give the squad a 3-0 lead. Wheeling would finally break through with two minutes remaining, when netminder Curtis Darling was pulled to create a slew of extra-man chances. Two Nailers goals in forty seconds made the contest tight, but Jim Henkel's empty net marker-and the Devils' first shorthanded goal of the season-iced the game for Trenton.

WHEELING REELING: Trenton built upon the momentum earned in Saturday's contest to flatten the Nailers in the Sunday tilt, 5-1. Maxime Ouellet stood tall in his second start for the Devils this season, shutting out the Nailers through 53 minutes. Brad Mills kicked off the scoring with two identical well-crafted goals in the first period. Both scores featured Mills beating a defender with a deke before finding space in the slot and snapping the puck top-left-shelf. Eric Castonguay earned three assists in the game, while Tony Zancanaro, Jim Henkel, and Bill LeClerc also scored. A three-on-one rush for Wheeling generated the sole Nailers goal of the game.

QUICK HITS: Trevor Kell has 7 points in his last four games (4g, 3a), and has a four-game point streak... Jim Henkel has scored in each of his past three games... Eric Castonguay earned three assists on 3/2/08 @ WHL... Ryan Gunderson leads all rookie defensemen in scoring with 38 points (4g, 34a)... Trenton had shutouts from Jason Smith and Maxime Ouellet into the 58th and 53rd minute against Wheeling on 3/1 and 3/2, respectively... The Devils are 7-0-1-2 when scoring four or more goals... Trenton is 19-8-1-2 when leading at any time during the course of the game.

UPCOMING GAMES

The Devils return home after a two-week road trip to host the Jackals. Trenton hopes to continue the Jackals' woes in the late part of the season. Elmira is winless in 11 of its past 12 games. With Elmira joining the ECHL this season, the Devils record this year mirrors the all-time set: 2-4-2.

Saturday, March 8, 12:00pm - Devils vs. Wheeling Nailers

Trenton hopes to continue its mastery of West Virginia's ECHL team in this early Saturday matinee. The Devils have scored 14 goals in their past three games against Wheeling, winning two while losing the third in the shootout. This season Trenton has a 5-2-1 mark against the Nailers, and leads 34-25-7 all-time.

Sunday, March 9, 4:00pm - Devils vs. Johnstown Chiefs

In this stretch run, every game is a must-win for Trenton. But none are more important than the Devils' two remaining matchups with the Johnstown Chiefs. Trailing the Chiefs by nine points for the final playoff spot in the division, Trenton needs a win in this game to gain ground. The Devils trail the Chiefs in the season set with a record of 2-5-1, but lead throughout history 46-26-7.
