Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE FREEDOM (33-37) @ JOLIET SLAMMERS (28-42)
Saturday, August 8, 2015 - 7:05 p.m. ET
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #71 - Road Game #32 (33-37), (17-14)
LHP #30 Zach Wendorf (0-1, 3.12 ERA) vs. RHP #26 Andrew Strenge (6-5, 4.71 ERA)
Last time out...
The Freedom won 2-1 Friday night as Patrick McGrath got his first professional win as he went six and a third innings, scattering six hits, allowing only one run and striking out two. McGrath did not walk anyone. Joliet did take the early lead as Nate Roberts scored on a Joe Staley RBI single in the first. But the Freedom rallied in the fifth against Joliet starter Spencer Medick (0-2). Frazier Hall walked to lead-off the frame. One out later Andrew Godbold drew a walk as well. Then Ozzy Gonzalez recorded the first hit of the game for the Freedom, a single to load the bases. With the bases loaded and one out, Zack Burling got hit by a pitch for his first professional RBI. Steve Carrillo got hit by a pitch as well to make it 2-1 in favor of the Freedom. Florence's pitching took care of the rest as Pete Levitt got the final two outs of the seventh, Ethan Gibbons did his thing in the eighth and Ed Kohout picked up his 14th save of the year in the ninth.
For Starters...
Zach Wendorf makes his first professional start tonight. His most recent appearance came out of the bullpen against the Washington Wild Things on August 2. He went two innings, allowing one run on three hits in a no decision as the Freedom won 8-5. Wendorf was signed by the Schaumburg Boomers out of the California Winter League in January of 2015. The 6'5" lefty from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point finished his senior season with a 2-1 record and 4.98 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen. The 23-year-old from Pine River, Wisconsin, struck out 27 in 34 innings for the Pointers in 2014, adding one save.
Glovework..
The Freedom have the best fielding percentage in the league at .982 while the Slammers have the worst fielding percentage in the league at .964.
A rare win...
Last night's 2-1 win was only the third time this season the Freedom have won a game when scoring fewer than three runs. They are now 3-27 when scoring fewer than three runs in a game.
Going for the series win...
If the Freedom win tonight they would clinch the season series against the Slammers. The only team the Freedom have officially won a season series against this year is the Lake Erie Crushers, as the Freedom went 5-4 against them.
Wild Card Update...
The Freedom are currently 5 games back of the River City Rascals for the last playoff spot. They will need help as Florence does not play River City again this season.
Walk this way...
The Freedom have drawn 261 walks this season, the second most in the league.
Road Warriors...
The Freedom are 17-14 away from home so far in 2015. Florence has won 6 out of the 10 road series they've played this season and six out of their last seven. Meanwhile Joliet is 18-22 at home.
Run like the wind...
The Freedom have stolen 112 bases this season, the most in the Frontier League. They have also been caught 53 times, the most in the league.
Get that lead...
The Freedom are 26-1 when holding the lead after the completion of seven innings.
Low scores...
The Freedom have scored three or fewer runs in each of their last 14 losses.
Five is the magic number...
The Freedom are 23-3 when they score five or more runs in a game this season.
That's offensive!
Only three active Freedom players are hitting over .225 this season. Sam Eberle leads the team at .302, Daniel Fraga checks in at .286 and Collins Cuthrell sports a .257 batting average. After that, the next highest batting average belongs to Ozzy Gonzalez at .224. The Freedom are hitting .240 as a team, the second lowest batting average in the league.
