Freedom Rally Late, Slammers Fall in Ten

Joliet, IL- Slammers' starter Andrew Strenge found a way to go seven scoreless innings only to receive a no-decision in the Slammers (28-43) extra inning loss to the Freedom (34-37) on Saturday.

Freedom starter Zach Wendorf tossed five superb innings but saw himself trailing after four. In that fourth inning CF Phil Bates hit a ball to right field that was dropped by Andrew Godbold toward the line. In that same play Godbold's throw to the infield got away and allowed Bates to motor around the diamond. Two errors by the right fielder and a 1-0 lead after four.

The Slammers registered their first hit and conventional run of the game in the sixth off of reliever Seth Harvey. Phil Bates led off and singled to left. RF Nate Roberts added a single to put two on. SS Alfredo Rodriguez walked to load the bases with no outs. DH Joe Staley plated his second RBI with a sacrifice fly scoring Bates pushing the lead to 2-0.

Florence rallied in the top of the ninth against closer Navery Moore. 3B Steve Carrillo walked to lead off and was pinch ran for by Mason Salazar. 2B Daniel Fraga singled putting two on. SS Zac Mitchell cut the lead in half with a single up the middle that scored Salazar. 1B Sam Eberle would tie the game with a single to right that allowed Fraga to score. Navery Moore would escape the inning with the game tied at two.

The Freedom took their first lead of the night in the tenth off of reliever Patrick Dyer. C Ozzy Gonzalez led off with a double to center field. Zach Burling moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Mason Salazar took advantage of his first plate appearance with the go-ahead single scoring Gonzalez. Daniel Fraga beat out a bunt putting two on. SS Zac Mitchell chopped a ball over the head of 1B Carlos Lopez that allowed Salazar to score. Dyer would retire the rest but not before the Freedom took a 4-2 lead.

The Slammers got the tying run to the plate with two outs after Nate Roberts singled. Alfredo Rodriguez lined out to short to end the game. Ed Kohout pitched the final two innings earning the win (4-3) and Patrick Dyer received the loss (1-1). Our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game was Phil Bates. He went 1-for-5 extending his hitting streak to seven games and also scored both Slammer runs.
