Washington Wild Things News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - After jumping out to an early 3-0 lead, the Wild Things collected 11 hits total as they coasted to a 5-2 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers at Schaumburg Baseball Stadium in game two of their three-game series. Reliever Tim Giel earned the win, while starting pitcher Brett Mabry suffered the loss.
Washington scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first for a hot start. With two runners on base, right fielder Scott Kalamar singled and drove in second baseman Matt Ford for his 22nd RBI of the season. First baseman Jimmy Yezzo also singled which scored another Wild Things run as third baseman Sam Mende crossed the plate. Center fielder Danny Poma added a single of his own, driving in Kalamar.
Schaumburg responded immediately in the bottom of the first when clean up hitter Kyle Ruchim hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Mike Schulze. On the same play, Poma made a spectacular grab to rob Ruchim of a hit and prevent another possible Boomers run. In the bottom of the third, the Boomers began to slowly inch their way back behind Robby Spencer's RBI-single, shortening the lead to 3-2.
The Wild Things added two key insurance runs later in the ball game. In the top of the sixth, the Washington extended its lead to 4-2 with Yezzo hitting a sacrifice fly to bring home left fielder David Popkins. In the top of the ninth, Austin Wobrock scored the fifth Wild Things run on an error committed by Schaumburg.
Washington's bullpen was stellar Saturday night as five relief pitchers combined for six shutout innings. After starting pitcher Jeremy Holcombe was pulled, Giel entered and pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts. Kolin Stanley, Matt Purnell and Steve Messner each provided a solid inning of work setting up Jonathan Kountis for the save. Kountis stunned all three Schaumburg hitters he faced as he struck out the side to earn his seventh save and set the Wild Things' record for most saves in a career.
The Wild Things look to sweep the Boomers in game three of the series on Sunday, August 9. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET. Fans can catch all of the Wild Things action on 95.3 FM WJPA with Randy Gore, on msasports.net/broadcasts or via Twitter @WashWildThings.
