Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - A quick 5-0 hole was too much to overcome as the Worcester Tornadoes dropped their first home game of the season, 9-1, to the Atlantic City Surf on Tuesday night at Fitton Field.
Worcester (8-3) picked up its lone run of the game off a fifth-inning leadoff home run by Omar Pena. It marks the eighth different Tornadoes' hitter to have gone deep in the first 11 games of the young season. Francisco Caraballo finished with two hits while Scott Grimes and Chris Colabello scorched Worcester's other two base knocks.
Atlantic City struck early and often, opening up the 5-0 advantage after two innings. Anthony Granato led off the game with a double. After moving to third on a groundout, Josh Burrus drove him in with a long sacrifice fly to center field.
In the second inning, Billy Hoggan led off with a line drive home run to left-center field. Three batters later, William Plaza followed with a home run of his own, a two-run shot to almost the identical spot. Lucas Taylor and Granato singles, sandwiched around a stolen base, gave the Surf their fourth run of the inning and fifth of the game.
Starting pitcher Junior Guerrero settled down nicely with scoreless frames in the third and fourth. Atlantic City greeted relief pitcher Jake Ociesa rudely with four runs over the fifth and sixth innings to open up a 9-1 lead. Joe Burke led off the fifth with a walk, advancing to third on a single by Josh Burrus. Ociesca was then called for a balk to score Burke. Burrus followed with a steal of third prior to scoring on a wild pitch for the 7-0 lead.
Worcester got its first run of the game in the fifth when Pena hit a no-doubt home run to left field to pull within six at 7-1. The Surf responded by using Ociesca's wildness to open up the 9-1 advantage. After walking the bases loaded, Burke singled in Plaza, followed by a Burrus sacrifice fly, scoring Taylor.
The Tornadoes continue their seven-game homestand Wednesday with another 6:05 p.m. tilt vs. Atlantic City. Shaun McNamara takes the hill for Worcester, looking to pick up his first win of the season. He will be opposed Adam Cox. It marks the last day of the 2-for-1 food drive. Fans who bring two canned goods to the ballpark can receive two tickets for the price of one! All food will be delivered to the Worcester County Food Bank in Shrewsbury. For tickets, call the Tornadoes' office at 508-792-2288 or crash the web at www. worcestertornadoes.com.
