New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - New Jersey designated hitter Luke Allen launched his first home run as a Jackals, a solo shot to deep right field in the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Jackals fell to Les Capitales de Quebec by a score of 7-3 on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Les Capitales got the scoring started in the first inning when third baseman Patrick Deschenes made it 2-0 with a two-run single. The Jackals countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning as shortstop Ramon Nivar grounded out to score center fielder Zach Smithlin, who led off the frame with a double, to cut the Quebec lead to 2-1. That score held until Allen's homer in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 2-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Les Capitales regained the lead. With two outs and the bases empty, shortstop Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas reached base on a throwing error by Nivar. He advanced to third when New Jersey starter Juan Done threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt. Rochon-Salvas scored when the next batter, right fielder Issael Gonzalez singled. Gonzalez made it 4-2 Quebec when he was plated on an RBI base knock by center fielder Goefrey Tomlinson.
Quebec blew the game open with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. After Done retired left fielder Alex Nunez and Rochon-Salvas to begin the inning, Gonzalez singled. Done walked the next batter, leadoff man Josh Colafemina, and was removed from the game in favor of Ted Serro. Serro proceeded to walk the next two batters to force in a run before hitting first baseman Eddie Lantigua to make it 6-2. With the bases still loaded, Capitales designated hitter Pat Scalabrini walked to give Quebec a 7-2 lead.
The Jackals added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Nivar, but Quebec reliever Felix Arellan pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory for Les Capitales by a score of 7-3. Done (2-1) took the loss for New Jersey, allowing six runs (four earned) on ten hits over 6 2/3 innings. Quebec starter Michel Simard (2-0) allowed three runs on nine hits over eight innings to earn Les Capitales' fourth win over the Jackals in five games this season. The Jackals and Capitales play an 11:05 a.m. school day game tomorrow at Yogi Berra Stadium. Isaac Pavlik takes the hill for the Jackals against Quebec's Erick Nadon in the final game of the three-game series. If you can't make it out to the game, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning five minutes prior to the start of the game.
