Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (March 30, 2012) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced today that Archbishop William Lori, the former Bishop of Bridgeport, will drop the ceremonial puck prior to the start of Saturday night's Sound Tigers game against the Portland Pirates.
Archbishop Lori's appearance is part of a tribute to the late Gary Hammill, Lori's former chauffeur and a former Webster Bank Arena employee. Hammill passed away last year and is remembered for his community spirit. Hammill's sons, Gary Jr. and Tim, attended Kolbe-Cathedral High School in Bridgeport and the school has established a scholarship in Hammill's name.
The Sound Tigers have raised more than $5,000 for the Gary Hammill Memorial Scholarship Fund. Gary's sons Gary Jr. and Tim, as well as his wife Joanne will be in attendance for the ceremonial puck drop. Members of the Kolbe-Cathedral High School Cheerleading Team will also be fundraising on the concourse during the game for the scholarship fund.
Archbishop Lori was the Bishop of Bridgeport from 2001-2012. On March 20, 2012, Lori was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore by Pope Benedict XVI.
