Penguins Clinch Playoff Berth with Win Over Whale

HARTFORD, Conn. - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Scott Munroe made 32 saves as the Penguins clinched a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs with a 3-0 win over the Connecticut Whale on Friday at Webster Bank Arena.
The Penguins jumped all over the home team in the first period, scoring three times in a span of 2:12.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton initially broke through on the power play at 6:49 when Colin McDonald faked a shot and found Jason Williams with a back-door pass for this 12th goal of the season.
Ben Street then made it 2-0 for the Penguins 34 seconds later as he spun around a defender and beat Whale goaltender Chad Johnson with a wrist shot for his team-leading 26th marker of the year.
Cody Wild then chased Johnson at 9:01 of the first with his first goal of the season and put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead, 3-0. Johnson would exit the match having made 10 saves on 13 shots, while Cameron Talbot came off the bench in relief for Connecticut.
Talbot would not allow the Penguins to score again, stopping all 18 shots he faced in 50:59 of playing time. Munroe, however, kept the Whale off the scoreboard for the entirety of regulation to gather his fourth shutout of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton heads to the postseason for the 10th consecutive season, the longest current active streak in the American Hockey League.
