Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. - Captain Stephen Gionta had a goal and as assist and newcomer David Wohlberg netted the game-winning goal, helping the Albany Devils to a crucial, 4-3, win Friday against the Providence Bruins at the Times Union Center.

Albany fought back from two deficits and improves to 30-28-6-5.

Wohlberg, who missed a penalty shot opportunity in the first period, registered his first career goal at 4:35 of the third to make the score 4-2 at the time. The assists went to his line mates Brad Mills and Gionta.

"His move on the penalty shot was pretty nice; he just missed it," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "Then I was thinking in my head, the way Mills laid it out and was late coming, [Wohlberg] was going to have to shoot. He made no mistake about that; he ripped that high."

"It was hard work by my line mates coming out of the zone and we just chipped it by," Wohlberg said. "Mills gave it to me and the defense and the goalie seemed to be playing off him, so I tried to look him off and just put it in."

Before that, Gionta scored at 1:48 of the third to give the Devils their first advantage of the night. The tally was his fifth of the season and was setup by Matt Anderson and Eric Gelinas.

"It definitely gives you the momentum for the rest of the period," Gionta said. "We were playing with the lead instead of behind like the last few games. The guys responded well and I thought it was a good team effort tonight."

The Bruins Maxime Sauve had a pair of goals and opened the scoring with a power-play tally at 1:28 of the first.

Kory Nagy tied the game thanks to a fortunate bounce off the end boards at 15:25 of the first. Sauve responded in the second with his second goal at 16:30.

Before the end of the second, Dan Kelly snipped a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Providence netminder Anton Khudobin at 17:06.

After Gionta and Wohlberg's goals, Craig Cunningham capped the scoring at 18:57 of the third.

Keith Kinkaid was busy making 35 saves on 38 shots. He earned his 17th victory of the season. Khudobin finished with 28 stops on 32 shots.

It's quick turnaround for the Devils, who host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Saturday at 7 p.m. The game is part of "Pucks & Paws Night". Tickets, admitting an individual and his/her dog, are $20 with $5 being donated to the Mohawk & Hudson Humane Society. The dogs and owners will have special seating in the upper bowl of the arena. Additional tickets are available for $15. To participate in "Pucks & Paws," fans can purchase tickets by contacting the Albany Devils Executive Office at 518-433-8457 or at the Times Union Center Box Office during the day of the game.
