Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Mathieu Aubin tipped in the game-winning goal with 7:52 gone in the third period as the Cincinnati Cyclones (11-9-0-1) held on to defeat the Chicago Express (14-11-2-1) by a 4-3 final score in front of 2,886 at U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday night.
For the third straight game, the Cyclones were able to strike first when A.J. Jenks potted his third goal of the season at the 3:36 mark making it 1-0. Chicago answered back not even a minute later, at 4:35, as Tyler Donati lifted a wrist shot past Cyclones net minder Brian Foster (W, 27 saves, 5-1-0) to even things at one. Donati lit the lamp again at 12:55 during an Express power play to give his team a 2-1 edge. However, Cyclones captain Mathieu Aubin caught a pass from Daniel Koger and sniped a shot over the shoulder of Chicago goalie Rob Nolan (L, 18 saves, 6-7-1) to once again knot things at two heading into the first intermission.
In a penalty-marred period, both teams traded goals. Chicago made it 3-2 at the 12:40 mark when Devin DiDiomete slammed in a rebound. The lead didn't last long, however, as Anthony Luciani slid home his eighth of the season after a tape-to-tape pass from A.J. Jenks to even the score again at three. Then, things got ugly; at the 15:48 mark, Mike Liambas was called for a five-minute major for charging, which ignited a full-scale line brawl. After all was said and done, 103 penalty minutes were handed out in the middle frame including five game misconduct penalties.
While the third period was not nearly as wild, the Cyclones were able to send the fans home happy for the ninth time this season, as Mathieu Aubin tipped in Jeff Foss' point blast for the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal at 7:52. In the final minutes, Chicago pulled their goalie in an attempt to tie the game, but Foster and company held on for the 4-3 victory.
