Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals (16-11-0-0) ended their season-high seven-game road trip with a 5-2-0-0 record after a 3-2 overtime victory in Wheeling on Wednesday evening, taking sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division heading into the Christmas break.
The Jackals return home to host the Nailers on Monday at First Arena, with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. on 4-for-$44 night. To reserve your seats to Elmira's day-after-Christmas contest, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto JackalsHockey.com.
REVIEWING THE ROAD TRIP
Elmira entered the road trip with an 11-9-0-0 overall record, heading into Trenton on Dec. 4 coming off of four-straight wins. The Jackals used a shootout to come away with a 2-1 win over the Titans to kick off the trip.
After a 27-hour bus ride to Florida, Elmira took two of three from the Everblades, prevailing 5-4 on Dec. 7, dropping an 8-2 decision on Dec. 9, snapping the Jackals' season-best six-game winning streak, and winning the rubber match on Dec. 10, 4-2.
The Jackals then traveled north to Chicago, falling behind 3-1 to the Express after one period. Elmira battled back but could not complete the comeback, losing 5-3 on Dec. 16. The next night in Kalamazoo, the Jackals ended their season series against the K-Wings with a 4-3 win, as Elmira took three of four games against Kalamazoo in 2011-2012.
Elmira's victory on Wednesday night gave the club its first win of the season over Wheeling. Goaltender Nick Niedert, an eighth-year pro making his first-ever ECHL start, stopped 24 shots as Riley Armstrong snapped in a puck in overtime to give Elmira the victory.
The road trip spanned 18 days from start to finish and saw the Jackals travel approximately 5,000 miles, playing games in five cities and states. Mike Radja led Elmira with eight points on the trip (4g-4a), Louie Caporusso topped the club with five goals, and Dustin Gazley paced the Jackals with five assists.
OVERTIME, ONE-GOAL WINS HIGHLIGHT PRE-CHRISTMAS SUCCESS
One season after going 0-7 in sudden-death overtime and 1-3 in shootouts, Elmira is perfect in seven games that have gone past regulation in 2011-2012. The Jackals and Nailers entered last night's contest as the only two teams in the ECHL still unbeaten in overtime and shootouts this season, with Elmira coming away as the last team standing in that category.
The Jackals are 3-0 in sudden death, with victories on Nov. 9 against Gwinnett, Nov. 26 at home versus Reading, and on Wednesday in Wheeling, all by the score of 3-2.
Elmira is 4-0 in shootouts as well, with goaltender Brian Stewart, currently on recall to the AHL's Binghamton Senators, having turned aside all 16 shots he has seen in the shootout in 2011-2012.
Complementing the Jackals' overtime success has been their ability to win one-goal games. After Wednedsay's game in Wheeling, the Jackals have won eight-straight games decided by one goal, with a 9-3-0-0 record in those contests this season. Of the Jackals' 27 games, 22 have been decided by either one or two goals.
