Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas - The playoff-bound Allen Americans won 6-4 over the Laredo Bucks at the Allen Event Center tonight. The victory puts their record at 36-12-4 (76 points).
For the second straight game, the Americans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Defenseman Jordie Benn set up Colton Yellow Horn at 2:21 for his eighth goal of the season on the power play. Not two minutes later, rookie Tobias Whelan backhanded a tally of his own to put the Americans up 2-0. Laredo struck back with a lamp lighter before the period ended. Laredo forward Neil Trimm went top shelf on Americans netminder Alexandre Vincent at 11:35. Yellow Horn almost registered his second of the night when he was alone in front of Desfosses, but his backhand went wide.
At 9:03 of the middle frame, the Bucks evened the score at two on Trimm's second goal of the night. The Americans responded immediately when Nathan O'Nabigon blasted one into the net ten seconds later. With 5:13 left in the period, alternate captain Bruce Graham registered his twenty-second goal of the season on a two-on-one break that gave Allen its two-goal lead back.
The Americans began the third period with a 4-2 advantage on the scoreboard, but the Bucks were not leaving Allen without a fight. Laredo's leading scorer, Jeff Bes, notched back-to-back goals to tie the score 4-4. Either club had 7:29 to score or the game was going to overtime. Graham proved to be the hero tonight when he shoved the puck into the net on a wrap-around to put the Americans up 5-4 with 6:24 remaining in regulation. Benn then clinched the game with an empty-net goal shot from the defensive end with 29 seconds left in the game to make it 6-4.
Vincent earned his first win for the Americans with 23 saves tonight. Earlier today the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters recalled goaltender Chris Whitley. The Monsters are the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. This is Whitley's second trip up after Texas called him up Feb. 13. The club signed Trey Boylan to serve as Vincent's backup tonight.
Allen hosts Bossier-Shreveport tomorrow, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The first 1,500 fans at each game will receive free souvenir cups, and the game is dubbed "Pink in the Rink." The Americans are wearing pink specialty jerseys in an effort with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to raise awareness about breast cancer. Fans have a chance to buy the game-worn jerseys in a live auction immediately following the game.
