Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - Phil Plante's game-winning goal came just 38 seconds into overtime as the Odessa Jackalopes topped the Amarillo Gorillas, 4-3, on Friday night at the Ector County Coliseum in front of a crowd of 3,511. The win improves Odessa's record to 39-10-4 and pulls the Jacks six points ahead of the Allen Americans for first place in the Southern Conference.
Plante's goal came on a rebound in front of the net after Sebastien Thinel's slap shot from the top of the right circle. Thinel's assist on the goal gave him a three-point night to lead all skaters.
Both teams traded goals in the first period when David Nimmo gave Amarillo a 1-0 lead on an Odessa turnover to the right of the net at 1:24. Kory Karlander then knotted the game with a power play goal for the Jackalopes at 8:34.
In period two the Jackalopes jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of goals from Thinel. The first came on a 2-on-1 rush at 2:14 when Thinel lifted a backhand shot into the top right corner. He then scored again on a penalty shot at 6:07, slipping the puck between the legs of Mike Brown. Amarillo responded quickly as Joe Guenther bounced a puck off the back of Juha Toivonen just 21 seconds later from behind the net. Nimmo then recorded his second goal of the game at 10:28 to tie the game at 3-3.
Neither team scored in the third period, setting up Plante's heroics in overtime.
Toivonen stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn his 20th win of the season. Karlander's power play goal was the 299th of his pro career and gives Odessa a power play goal in 14 straight games. With his three-point night, Thinel now has 24 points in nine games during the month of February.
The Jacks and Gorillas meet again on Saturday at 7:05 PM. The action can be heard on Jack FM.
