Altoona Curve News Release
Altoona Curve (0-4) at Akron Aeros (3-1)
Monday, April 13 - 7:05 p.m. First Pitch
Canal Park- Akron, PA
Game #5 Road Game #5
LAST TIME OUT: Right-hander Mike Crotta tossed 5.0 shutout innings and allowed just five hits for the Altoona Curve on Saturday afternoon, but walked away with a no-decision, as the Erie SeaWolves for the fourth straight game rallied late to steal a victory from the Curve, 2-1. RHP Jeff Sues suffered the loss, as he allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning...Pedro Lopez drove in the only Curve run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Altoona Curve will look for their first win of the 2009 season tonight at Canal Park vs. the Akron Aeros (AA - Cleveland). This is the first time in franchise history that Altoona has started a season 0-4...The Curve are currently the only team in the Eastern League without a victory.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: Altoona's Daniel Moskos will make his first start of the season tonight and his first start in Double-A. The Pirates' 2007 first round draft choice (fourth overall) in 2007, Moskos made his Double-A debut on Friday night in Erie, tossing 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed one run on two hits...Moskos spent the entire 2008 season in Lynchburg (A). He made 29 appearances (20 starts) with the Hillcats, compiling a 7-7 record with a 5.95 ERA.
Akron will send left-hander Chuck Lofgren will take the hill for the Aeros on Monday. Lofgren will enter his third season with the Akron Aeros. In 2007, Logren sported a 12-7 record for Akron in 26 starts. In '08, Lofgren went 2-6 mark with a 5.99 ERA. Lofgren was ranked as the No. 2-rated prospect by Baseball America in the Cleveland chain a year ago, but is not listed among the Top 30 this year. Tonight, Lofgren will make his 10th career start against Altoona. He has an all-time mark of 3-2 against Altoona.
HERRERA TO AAA: RHP Yoslan Herrera has been promoted to Indianapolis (AAA)...No replacement has been named to the Curve roster as of yet. Currently, the Curve have 23 active players on their roster, plus one on the Disabled List (RHP Derek Hankins).
CURVE/AKRON SERIES: Tonight is the first of 24 meetings between Altoona and Akron. With the unbalanced schedule in the E.L., Akron will be the Curve's second most common opponent in 2009 (second only to Erie). In 2008, Altoona sported an 10-14 record against the Aeros to run the all-time mark against their Southern Division rival to 99-111 (40-60 at Akron)...Also in '08, Altoona had a not-so-spiffy 2-9 record at Canal Park.
LEADERS OF THE PACK: Curve shortstop Brian Friday has made a great first impression in his first three games played. Friday currently leads the E.L. in batting average (.667, 8x12) hits (8) and runs scored (6)...Friday is also second in on-base percentage (.714)... Jonel Pacheco's two stolen bases are also tied for tops in the circuit.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: Though Altoona is off to an 0-4 start, the team has played close baseball. In their opening four-game series at Erie, Altoona's largest margin of defeat was by three runs (Thursday, 10-7). Two of Altoona's losses were by one run (Wednesday, 8-7; Saturday, 2-1). Altoona has also not been deprived of offense during the losing streak. The team's .279 team average in four games is second best in the E.L. Their 38 hits as a collective unit are also tops among the 12 teams in the league.
