Mil-WALK-ee...What had been a problem became a full-blown epidemic for Bowie pitching Saturday, as the Baysox broke the double-digit mark by issuing 10 walks in Akron's 12-2 win in the series finale. Seven of those 10 runners came around to score as the Aeros collected a dozen runs on only six hits, and in fact were out-hit in the contest. Akron turned three walks into three runs in the second and scored both runners who walked as part of a four-run fourth before icing the game with five runs over the final two innings. All told, Bowie pitching allowed an astounding 32 walks in 33 innings in the series, which is really the main reason Akron leads the Eastern League with a .377 team on-base percentage, despite ranking last on the 12-team circuit with a .202 team batting average. Six Akron regulars currently have an on-base percentage of better than .380, and Altoona (tonight's opponent) is third in the league with 16 walks allowed.
The Sherriff of Nottingham...The Aeros will welcome back a familiar face this evening, as LHP Shawn Nottingham returns to Canal Park as a member of the Curve. Nottingham, who spent parts of the last three seasons in the Cleveland system, was traded to Pittsburgh March 30th for a player to be named later. Nottingham was 0-2 in 19 relief appearances for Akron last year before finishing the season as a starter in Class A Kinston, going 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 14 starts. He attended Jackson High School in Canton and is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two relief outings for Altoona this year.
A Look at Altoona...Since we've been over the walks in the Bowie series ad nauseam, let's take a look at the Curve in preparation of tonight's series-opener. Altoona comes into the game as the only winless club in the Eastern League after dropping all four games in Erie to begin the year, but there were some notable individual efforts in that series. IF Brian Friday had a monster series, going 8-12 with a double, triple, homer, six runs scored and two RBI in three games, which lends itself to a batting average of .667 and an on-base mark of .714 entering play tonight. IF Jim Negrych, who won the Carolina League batting crown last season, also got off to a hot start going 7-17 (.412 average) in the four-game series. On the hill, starters Michael Crotta and Jared Hughes combined to allow just five hits and one walk in 11 shutout innings, although both right-handers were saddled with no-decisions.
Condolences...Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Philadelphia Phillies radio broadcaster Harry Kalas, who passed away today while preparing for a game against the Washington Nationals. Kalas served as the voice of the Phillies since 1971 and was part of the first broadcast team in Houston Astros history in 1965. He received the Ford C. Frick Award for career excellence in baseball broadcasting from the Hall of Fame in 2002.
