Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights were held without a goal for a second straight game and lost to the Grand Rapids Griffins 1-0 at the Civic Auditorium. The Knights lost to Iowa 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Despite multiple opportunities for both sides, neither team could find the back of the net in the first two periods. Grand Rapids almost broke the deadlock winning a face-off in the Knights zone and firing a shot that beat Knights' starting goaltender Curtis McElhinney but not the crossbar.
Warren Peters came close to putting the Knights ahead while short handed in the second period. Driving to the net on a breakaway, Peters was stoned when Jimmy Howard flashed his left pad in the final five seconds of the period.
With 2:01 remaining in the third period, the Griffins would get the only goal of the game. A misplayed puck in the neutral zone led to a 2-on-1 opportunity. Jeff Campbell found a streaking Jamie Tardif who deflected the puck past McElhinney to take the lead.
The Knights pulled McElhinney for the extra attacker but could not get a good chance in the closing seconds.
The Knights are now 37-21-3-1. The Knights have not scored a goal in the last 121 minutes and have failed to score on 15 consecutive power plays.
Three Stars: 1. Jamie Tardif (GRA) - 1 goal; 2. Jimmy Howard (GRA) - 26 saves; 3. Curtis McElhinney (OMA) - 18 saves.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights complete the two game series with Grand Rapids on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Knights will host the second annual Paper Airplane toss to benefit the March of Dimes. Fans are invited to purchase the airplanes for $1. After the game, a brand new Chrysler Sebring will be parked at center ice, and fans can toss their planes at the car. The first person to fly their airplane through the sunroof of the car will win it, courtesy of your local Chrysler Dealers. All the proceeds from the airplane sale will benefit the March of Dimes.
Tickets for all Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' games are on sale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium box office Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets also are available through all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (402) 422-1212. Kids 12 and under get in free with a paid adult on tickets purchased after 5:00 p.m. Other restrictions apply.
