Hershey Bears News Release
Bruce Boudreau wins in Manchester for the first time as a visiting coach, with several BEARS enjoying big offensive nights as HERSHEY defeated the Monarchs 5-3 Friday night at Verizon Wireless Arena in New Hampshire.
For the second straight game against the BEARS, Jason LaBarbara struggled through the first 20 minutes. After being run from the game just 8:22 into the game on November 25 at GIANT Center, allowing three goals on seven shots, LaBarbara allowed three goals in the first period again. Joey Tenute opened the scoring with his 20th goal of the season at 1:26 of the first period, with help from newcomer Matt Reid and Donny Grover. After Manchester tied the game with a goal by Dany Roussin at 5:04, the BEARS would strike for two more to take a 3-1 lead after one. Kyle Wilson blasted a shot from the top of the left circle that kicked off the leg pad of LaBarbara into the back of the net at 13:36. The goal was assisted by Alexandre Giroux and Jakub Klepis. On the power play late in the first, former Monarchs centerman Dave Steckel scored from close range against LaBarbara at 19:59 from Tenute and Quintin Laing. HERSHEY fired 16 shots at the Manchester net in the first, and allowed just five on Maxime Daigneault.
Manchester would turn the tide early in the second period, scoring twice to tie the game. Oleg Tverdosky scored his third goal of the season for the Monarchs in limited action at 3:15 to bring Manchester back within a goal at 3-2. Matt Moulson would then tie the game at the 7:31 mark with his 17th of the season. Less than a minute later, the BEARS would come off the mat to take a 4-3 lead, with Chris Bourque leading the way. Bourque's 17th goal of the season from Reid and Tenute at 8:16 gave HERSHEY a 4-3 lead that they would take to second intermission. The Monarchs outshot the BEARS 14-9 in the second frame.
HERSHEY would score the only goal of the final 20 minutes when Bourque scored his second of the game and 18th of the season. The BEARS outshot the Monarchs 11-10 in the final period to win at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Notes: Stephen Werner skated for HERSHEY Friday for the first time since December 1 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Werner had been playing in the interim for South Carolina (ECHL). Reid became the 45th different player to play for the BEARS in 2006-07. Reid was recalled earlier this week from South Carolina. The BEARS will travel by bus following the game to Portland where HERSHEY will play the Pirates Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The BEARS now have 18 regular season games remaining in 2006-07. The goal for Tenute in the first period tied a career-high.
