July 10, 2018 - American Association (AA)
Texas AirHogs News Release
GARY, Ind. - Meng Weiqiang went six innings of two-hit, two-run ball to key a 5-3 series-opening victory for the Texas AirHogs at U.S. Steel Yard Monday. Correlle Prime finished with three hits, including a home run, as the AirHogs ran away from the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
Meng allowed two earned runs or less for the fifth time in his last seven starts, striking out three and overcoming a first-inning run on a wild pitch to move to 4-4 this year. He allowed just one earned run on two hits in an excellent performance.
The AirHogs erased an early RailCats lead with RBIs from Chen Junpeng and Chen Chen in the fourth vs. Gary starter Lars Liguori (1-5). A fifth-inning homer by Prime and an RBI double by Chen Chen increased the advantage to 4-1.
Prime struck again in the seventh for an RBI single to push the edge to 5-2. Yang Yanyong held the RailCats to one run in the seventh and eighth before Carlos Contreras notched his fourth save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth.
The AirHogs outhit the RailCats 11-6. Prime, Stewart Ijames, Dillon Thomas, and Chen Junpeng all finished with multiple hits.
Texas (13-34) and Gary SouthShore (24-24) will continue the series Tuesday with a 12:10 matchup at U.S. Steel Yard. LHP Tyler Matzek (1-5, 6.09 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. LHP Jeff McKenzie (2-5, 4.97 ERA) for the RailCats. A live broadcast of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
The Texas AirHogs - powered by Beijing Shougang Eagles travel to Gary and Wichita this week and will return home July 16 for a doubleheader vs. the Chicago Dogs.
