Falling Short...The Aeros fell behind early last night and the offense never kicked into gear as Connecticut and starter Joey Martinez rolled to a 4-1 win. The Defenders roughed up Akron starter Steven Wright with home runs by Ryan Rohlinger and Adam Witter in the third and fourth innings, respectively, before adding their final run in the fifth on an RBI single by Olmo Rosario to make it 4-0. Martinez was dominant over seven shutout innings, allowing just three singles (and none of the runners reached third base). After the Aeros recorded consecutive singles with two out in the first, Martinez promptly retired 19 of the final 20 hitters he faced to close his outing.
Not Enough...The Aeros finally started a rally in the eighth off Defenders reliever Adam Cowart, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. C Wyatt Toregas led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout, and 2B Brandon Pinckney drove Toregas home with an RBI flare down the right-field line to make it 4-1. CF Jose Constanza followed with bunt single along the cut of the grass on the third-base line and SS Josh Rodriguez used an infield hit to load the bases, but RF Bronson Sardinha struck out and 3B Wes Hodges grounded out sharply to short to end the inning.
Relief Work...Akron's bullpen had a strong showing last night, working 4.2 shutout innings and allowing just one hit and striking out three while walking four. RHP Erik Stiller escaped Wright's two on, one out jam in the fifth and then worked a scoreless sixth. Stiller has stranded 17 of 21 inherited runners on the season, the best percentage on the team. LHP Tony Sipp has recovered remarkably after a rough start to his Akron season, tossing two more scoreless innings with just a walk and one strikeout. The left-hander has now allowed just one run in his last seven outings, spanning nine innings. RHP Randy Newsom worked the ninth, and stranded a pair of runners after issuing back-to-back walks with two away.
Olympic Update...Team USA dropped its first game of the Olympic preliminaries, 8-7 to South Korea in Beijing today. Aeros LF Matt LaPorta was 0-4 with a strikeout in the defeat. The Americans, trailing 6-4 going into the ninth, scored three times in the top half to take a 7-6 lead. Former Aero and current Buffalo reliever Jeff Stevens couldn't shut the door though, as Korea scored twice in the bottom half with the final run coming on the help of an errant pickoff attempt by Stevens. Lee Taek-keun advanced to third on the miscue, and Lee Jong-wook drove him in with a sacrifice fly for the walk-off win. Team Canada defeated host China 10-0 in their Olympic opener; Aeros reliever T.J. Burton pitched one-third of an inning, allowing a hit and notching a strikeout in the seventh inning.
Did You Know...Akron's magic number to clinch a playoff spot dropped to 14 with Harrisburg's loss last night.
