Sandoval & Rohlinger Headed to the Bay Area
August 13, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- Their time spent in Norwich was short lived but fun and inspiring as well. Pablo Sandoval and Ryan Rohlinger are now headed to the Bay Area, the San Francisco Giants announced today.
Sandoval and Rohlinger had just finished up a game in Akron, OH where the team pulled off its fourth consecutive win, 4-1 before hearing wind of their promotion late last night. The two will join the Giants in Houston for a series against the Astros tonight at 8:05pm.
Sandoval receives a belated birthday present with the call up as he just turned 22 this past Monday. The Venezuelan switch hitting catcher/first baseman was quick to get noticed in the Eastern League with his hose of an arm and power at the plate. Sandoval compiled a .337 batting average (lead the team), 8 homers (3rd) and 37 RBI in just 44 games. He managed to string together a 15 game hitting streak from July 6 through July 23rd where he batted .408 with 4 homeruns, 17 RBI and 7 doubles. His ability to work the count and deliver in clutch situations should provide a spark to the Giants lineup.
Rohlinger had no issues getting acclimated to the double-A level as he blasted a two run homerun in just his second game with Connecticut helping the team defeat Portland back on June 24. Rohlinger delivered with the stick batting .296 with 6 long balls and 19 RBI's but most noticeably known for his "sponge like" abilities at the hot corner in third base. He was hitting an impressive .385 in his last 5 games played in Connecticut.
The Defenders will receive backstop Nestor Rojas from the Giants low-A affiliate, August Green Jackets. This will mark Rojas second stint with Connecticut this season.
Connecticut is playing game 2 of the best of 3 series vs. Akron currently from Canal Park in Akron, OH. First pitch was at 7:05pm. Catch all the action on the Defenders Radio Network.
